I have just permanently swapped my dearly loved Prius (aka "Bryd") for a friend's Jeep Liberty.
The one thing that the Prius couldn't do for me was tow, and now that I am living nomadically in a trailer, having a good tow vehicle is mandatory.
I am sure going to miss my sweet Bryd though. The Prius is one of the best designed vehicles I have ever had the pleasure to drive. Not to mention, I sure loved getting 45 MPG.
Here are some pictures from my past two years as a Prius owner...
"Four out of five Geeks agree..." When I first bought Bryd back in May 2004, I was the fourth Geek from GeekSpeak to get a Prius. We always meant to do a group photo with all four cars parked on the beach in Santa Cruz, but we never managed to make that happen. Here I am with one of the Geeks, Sean.
Bryd made the trip to Burning Man last year. She could haul a surprising amount of cargo - and I even installed a hitch receiver for a bike rack.
I could fit my entire paramotor (imagine a flying lawn chair with a paraglider wing overhead) rig in the back of the Prius, and still have room for a back-seat passenger. Yes, my Prius was an aircraft carrier!
And now here is Jeep - my new aircraft carrier, and home tower - shining in the rising sun a few weeks ago.

Boulder Creek?
I lived for five years in Boulder Creek, up the road towards Big Basin park. Though I actually didn't get the Prius until after I moved to SF. Now I am living nomadic - hanging out in Felton the past few days at a friends place.*grin*
Small world!

I almost tried...
I started off looking for a small trailer that I could tow behind the Prius - small little classic teardrops. And I found a few folks who had done some Prius towing - and based on that feedback, I determined that the Prius could probably safely tow 500lbs to 1000lbs, particularly on flat terrain. But then I realized that I really wanted to live somewhere I could actually sit upright... The smallest teardrops might be Prius towable, but they were not going to be comfortable for extended living.
And then I discovered the Tab - the perfect design. But at 1400lbs empty, way too heavy for a Prius.
And so that leads me to the Jeep.
But I agree - it would have looked GREAT! :-)

should have got a Highlander hybrid
oh well, have fun with more stuff behind the jeepJune 8 2006, 18:38:30 UTC 5 years ago
Re: should have got a Highlander hybrid
I test drove one - and I was really disappointed. It just didn't have the same magic as the Prius. When I first got in a Prius I knew it was something special. The Highlander didn't give me that feeling. I liked the new RAV4 better.
But regardless - a used Jeep is a lot more affordable than a new car - so that made the decision for me in the end.

I'm always impressed by people who manage to such a vast quantity of stuff in the back of their Prius; if I were at all worried about them having cargo space, it's settled now. :)
I love that tagline though, "My Prius was an aircraft carrier!" You should make a bumper sticker that says "Aircraft carrier" and send it to the friend you swapped with; I'm more than sure he'll appreciate it. :)

Cargo...
The Prius actually seems to be able to haul nearly as much as the Jeep on the inside! Even with the Jeep, I can only carry one back-seat passenger with the the "aircraft" loaded up.The Prius really is amazingly well designed - for both cargo and passengers.

Ok...
Ok, I will add a cut...Though personally I tend to prefer cut tags only for really long posts or massive sets of photos. I always hate it when somebody cuts just three or four photos. It makes skimming through Journals harder since I have to be on the lookout for cut tags to click.
